I chose to upgrade the one thing Toyota didn’t change to LED with the new 4th Gen, which is the front turn signal bulbs.
I went with LASFIT because I’ve been using them with all my previous vehicles. They always deliver solid build quality LEDs that last long and keep you safer on the streets while night driving for you and the other people out there.
I saw LASFIT had an LED with the option to have the switchback function while the headlights are on. Normally, the new 4th gen Tacos have a halogen dimmed amber yellow bulb as an added DRL that flashes when signaling, but LASFIT LEDs have a nice OEM white color to match the low beams and then switch back to amber for signaling to turn. I think this would look unique and beautiful since my Tacoma is white, so that was a huge selling point on top of all the positives I already felt towards the brand.
After a few days, I received the LEDs and was amazed by the size and quality of the LEDs. Compared to the stock halogen bulbs, they’re almost twice the size! That gave me confidence in the longevity and reliability of the new LEDs. I couldn’t wait to install them!
Installation is straightforward. Thankfully, Tacomas are easy to work on. The driver-side bulb location is simple to get to, which is just a reach around, twist, and pull. The passenger side, on the other hand, will need a tiny bit more attention, but I will try to help mitigate most of the brain work by giving you some easy tips to help you speed up the process and give you a worry-free install so you can enjoy the nice upgrade.
First off, you will not need any tools! That’s already a plus when doing a nice mod like this. After you pop your hood, on the left side you will see the snorkel intake funnel. You will need to remove that one and only piece to get to the bulb location. As you will see, there are 4 pop clips that you can easily push from the top downward until you hear a click. Then, all you have to do is wiggle it a bit and pull up to remove it.
After you remove all 4 clips, there is a nice little spot to put them so they don’t fall and get lost (see pictures). Then, just pull the snorkel up and place it aside. From there, do the same as the driver side: reach around, twist, and pull.
Plug and play is super simple and easy, BUT one thing about LEDs, which most people think are dead on arrival, is you must plug the new LEDs the correct way. So I’d suggest plugging one in and hitting the hazard lights to see if they blink. If not, simply unplug, flip the bulb, and re-plug it back in, and they will work beautifully.
When reinstalling the snorkel, the 4 clips that need to go back in place will need to be popped back out fully, instead of the way you pushed them down to take out (see pictures). One thing I found easy to do to push the middle clip back out is to push the pointy part on the ground to help push the middle clip back out. Then simply install the clips and push the middle clip flush with the outer clip to secure the snorkel. Repeat with the other 3 and done!
I would say I’m super satisfied and impressed with the LEDs. I’m loving the switchback functionality with the sleekness of the white DRL lights to match the low beams, which uniquely gives a more premium look to the truck. It’s all about the details, which I’m a big fan of.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend this simple upgrade to any 4th gen Tacoma owners who want to get rid of the ONLY halogen bulb on their Tacoma while also making their truck look more premium!
